Lake Como branches into three arms below the southern Alps, the village of Bellagio sitting at the point where the western and eastern arms meet. The lake has been a summer retreat for the wealthy of northern Italy since Roman times — Pliny the Younger kept two villas here in the first century — and the long history of being looked at has shaped how the place presents itself. The shoreline is essentially a curated landscape, two thousand years in the making. Made in late September 2016 during my first time in Italy. The shoulder of the season is the best moment for Lake Como — the summer crowds have thinned, the light is softer, and the lake recovers some of the quietness that made the Romans build here in the first place.
