A dead tree's roots spread out across the sand in a wide, bleached fan, other dead trunks visible further down the shoreline behind it. The roots on this stretch of beach are almost always more dramatic than the trunks themselves — evidence of how much the tree fought to hold its ground before the water finally won. Taken while circling one particular tree to find the angle where its roots read most clearly against the sand.
