A single dead oak, its bark long gone and its roots exposed and bleached, stands with the ocean stretching out flat behind it. The tree's shape — gnarled trunk, sprawling roots, bare reaching limbs — is a near-perfect record of how it grew when it was alive and rooted well inland, before the shoreline moved to meet it. One of the last color photographs taken during the walk down Capers Island's boneyard beach.
