Trajan's Column was completed in 113 AD to commemorate the emperor Trajan's victories in the Dacian Wars. A continuous spiral relief winds up its 98-foot height, depicting the entire campaign in approximately 2,500 carved figures — the longest narrative artwork to survive from antiquity. Trajan's ashes were originally interred at the base; the statue of him at the top was replaced by a statue of St. Peter in the sixteenth century.
Made in October 2016 in black and white during my first time in Italy.
