Laid out in the 1840s on the site of the old King's Mews, Trafalgar Square commemorates the 1805 naval battle that secured British dominance of the seas for the next century. Nelson's Column rises 169 feet in its center; four bronze lions, cast from captured French cannons, rest at its base; the National Gallery occupies the north side. It is one of the most public spaces in London, and one of the most photographed.
Photographed in May 2023 during my first trip to England. Trafalgar Square is a place where the entire history of empire and its consequences sits visibly in one square — and where, on any given afternoon, people simply have lunch.
