Tower Bridge was finished in 1894 after eight years of construction — a combined bascule and suspension bridge designed to let ships pass through the heart of the city. The two towers in Victorian Gothic were a deliberate stylistic match to the Tower of London on the north bank. Most visitors mistakenly call this London Bridge; London Bridge is the plain stone span just upstream, and Tower Bridge has been quietly correcting that confusion for over a hundred years. Photographed in May 2023 during my first trip to the city. Tower Bridge is one of those landmarks that turns out to be exactly as good in person as its reputation suggests.
