The Spanish Steps — the Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti — were built in 1725 to connect the Piazza di Spagna at the bottom to the French church of Trinità dei Monti at the top. There are 135 steps; they are the widest staircase in Europe, and one of the most famous public spaces in Rome. The Barcaccia fountain at the bottom, by Bernini's father, Pietro, has been running since 1629.

Photographed in October 2016 in black and white during my first trip to Italy. The Spanish Steps are one of those Roman spaces that has been a meeting place for so long — for poets, painters, models, tourists — that walking up them feels like joining a centuries-long conversation.
