Looking straight up between the two towers of the cable-stayed bridge that carries traffic across the Savannah River, the cables fan out like rigging against a hard blue sky stacked with cumulus. Completed in 1991, the bridge was built tall enough to clear the largest container ships calling on the Port of Savannah, one of the busiest on the East Coast.
