A stream pushes hard through a jumble of boulders, a bleached log wedged diagonally across the current just above the main channel of whitewater. Overhead, sunlit canopy leans in from both banks, bright enough to blow out against the darker rock below. This is Tallulah Gorge, a nearly 1,000-foot-deep chasm cut by the Tallulah River in northeast Georgia, sometimes called the "Grand Canyon of the South."
The log and the boulders give the water something to fight against, and the contrast between the lit canopy and the shadowed gorge floor does the rest — a small, contained drama of moving water in a very old crack in the mountains.
