Stonehenge has been standing on Salisbury Plain for roughly five thousand years — older than the Egyptian pyramids, older than written language in Britain by some three thousand years. The stones came from two sources: the larger sarsens from the Marlborough Downs twenty miles away, the smaller bluestones from the Preseli Hills in Wales, nearly two hundred miles distant. How they were moved, and exactly why, is still being argued over.Photographed in May 2023 during my first trip to the United Kingdom. The site is famous enough that it's tempting to think you know what it looks like before you arrive; you don't. The scale, the silence of the plain around it, and the obvious fact that someone made this — these things are not communicated by photographs of other photographs.
