St. Patrick's

St. Patrick's Cathedral, completed in 1878 and the seat of the Archdiocese of New York, is the great Gothic Revival church of Fifth Avenue — its nave rising in clustered columns and ribbed vaults to more than a hundred feet, in the medieval French manner translated into American marble.

Photographed May 2013, inside. The eye is carried up the columns into the vault and down the nave toward the glowing altar, the chandeliers hanging in the shadowed air. In black and white the cathedral becomes what it was built to be — height and light and stone reaching upward.
