St. Matthew's steeple rises above King Street at dusk, its Gothic Revival stonework and stained glass catching the day's last direct light. At close to three hundred feet, it's the tallest structure in Charleston's historic district — a striking claim for a congregation that dates back to 1840 and has rebuilt this building more than once after fire.
