A gull at rest along the Giudecca Canal, the broad stretch of water that separates the main city of Venice from the long island of the Giudecca to its south. The canal is one of the principal shipping channels of the lagoon — large vessels pass through here regularly — but it also has stretches of quiet, especially at the western end where the working port gives way to residential neighborhoods.
Photographed in late September 2016 in black and white. Venetian wildlife is its own subject; the gulls have learned the city as well as the humans have.
