When the lake's shallow margins dry, they leave a crust of cracked mud and salt — polygons of baked earth stretching to the horizon. It is one of the emptiest-looking landscapes in the country, and one of the strangest underfoot.
Photographed June 2003. The cracked flat fills most of the frame, receding to a low line where hazy mountains float above white glare. Stark and textural — a picture made almost entirely of the ground.
