Saint Mark's Square is the only piazza in Venice — every other public space is a campo. Napoleon called it "the drawing room of Europe," and the description has stuck for two hundred years. The Basilica, the Doge's Palace, the Campanile, the long arcades of the Procuratie all open onto it; the square holds the entire civic and ceremonial history of the Venetian Republic in a single open space.
Photographed in late September 2016 in black and white during my first trip to Italy. San Marco has been photographed so many times that finding a fresh angle is almost impossible; what is possible is finding a fresh moment, and that is what photography here is really about.
