Skye is its own country. Cross the bridge from the mainland and the light changes, the road narrows, the sky widens — sea on one side, mountain on the other, weather moving across both faster than seems possible. There is a reason photographers and painters have been drawn here for centuries; the island gives more than it asks. This image was made on my first day on Skye in late May 2023, somewhere along the road north from Sligachan. I had wanted to come here since I first started taking photographs seriously, and the place delivered everything I'd been promised — and a great deal I hadn't expected.
