Masts against the Bristol sky — a frame from the harborside that strips the city down to its essential identity. Bristol has been a port for so long that the silhouette of standing masts is part of the local visual language; the historic vessels moored along the Floating Harbour keep that silhouette in place even now that most of the working ships have moved downriver.
Photographed in black and white in May 2023. The shapes of masts, lines, and rigging are graphic enough that color often dilutes them; monochrome lets the composition do its work.
