Sergeant William Jasper stands frozen mid-charge atop his monument in Madison Square, flag in hand, bronze gone dark green against a bright, cloud-streaked sky. Jasper died in 1779 retrieving the regimental colors during the Siege of Savannah, and the monument — dedicated in 1888 — remains one of the more dramatic pieces of public sculpture in the historic district. Photographed at midday, the sun high enough to throw hard shadows across the pedestal's inscriptions — a contrast to the softer, overcast light in most of the other square photographs from this trip.
