Twenty-three miles long and over seven hundred feet deep at its darkest point, Loch Ness holds more freshwater than every lake in England and Wales combined. The water is famously dark — peat-stained, mirror-still in calm weather, ruffled into chop when the wind comes down the Great Glen. Mountains rise on either side, and the loch holds the eye in a way that few inland waters do.
Made on the western shore in late spring 2023, on a clear afternoon when the surface lay nearly motionless. Whatever stories the loch is asked to carry, the place itself is older and stranger than any of them — and quieter, too, than its reputation suggests.
