There is no single Loch Ness. The loch changes hour by hour with the weather — slate-grey under cloud, almost black in calm shadow, silver when the sun breaks through. Twenty-three miles of water held between steep wooded slopes, with the ruined silhouette of Urquhart Castle marking the western shore and the Great Glen running the loch's full length like a seam in the country. Photographed in late May 2023 during my first journey to the Highlands. The famous stories about the loch are well-known; what fewer people talk about is how quiet it is — how much of the time the only thing on the water is wind, and the only thing in the air is the call of something distant.
