Lily pads on Caddo Lake — the vast cypress maze straddling the Texas–Louisiana line, the only large natural lake in Texas and one of the most distinctive bodies of water in the South. Its bayous and sloughs are thick with water lilies, lotus, and Spanish moss; in summer the pads spread across the still water in great mats, broken here and there by open channels.

Photographed on Caddo Lake in the summer of 1998. Caddo doesn't look like anywhere else — it's less a lake than a flooded forest, and the lily pads are part of what makes it feel almost prehistoric.
