A long view down the lake from one of its high western vantages. Lake Como is the third-largest of the Italian lakes and the deepest in Europe — over 1,300 feet at its lowest point. The water is glacial in origin, fed by mountain streams, and stays cold even in late summer. The villages — Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, Tremezzo — sit close to the shoreline because there is very little flat ground anywhere on the lake.
