Ladder and Horizon

White tubular rails and a ladder occupy the right of the frame, all clean curves and verticals, set against a wide calm expanse of water and a low horizon under a soft, cloud-flecked sky. Two-thirds of the picture is nearly empty.

The appeal is the tension between the made and the open — crisp human geometry on one side, weightless space on the other. The hard white lines give the eye something to hold before it drifts out into all that quiet.
