A kayak on Lake Hamilton — a single small craft on a large quiet lake, the kind of scene that says as much about the morning as about the boat. The Ouachita lakes are made for this: long, calm stretches of water ringed by wooded hills, best explored slowly and close to the surface.

Photographed in October 2017. There's a particular pleasure in being on the water before anyone else is — just the paddle, the hull, and a lake that hasn't been disturbed yet.
