Inside St. Peter's

St. Peter's Basilica is the largest church in the world by interior volume — 187,000 square feet of nave, transept, and dome, much of it designed by Bramante, Michelangelo, and Bernini in succession over a hundred and twenty years. The dome by Michelangelo is the model for nearly every major dome built in the West afterward; the interior, by Bernini, is one of the most overwhelming spatial experiences in European architecture.

Made in October 2016 in black and white during my first time in Italy. St. Peter's is a building where photography can only ever capture a fragment; the scale defeats every camera and every visitor.
