A second view of the palace courtyard, taken from a different angle. The Giants' Staircase, by Antonio Rizzo, ascends to the loggia where the doge was crowned; the two enormous statues of Mars and Neptune at its head were added by Sansovino in the sixteenth century to represent Venice's dominion over land and sea. Every detail in this space is doing political work.
Made in late September 2016 in black and white. There are very few buildings anywhere where the historical and visual content are this dense; the Doge's Palace rewards multiple visits and multiple photographs.
