The Fori Imperiali — the Imperial Forums — are a series of monumental complexes built by Caesar, Augustus, Vespasian, Nerva, and Trajan to extend the older Forum's civic function. They lie just north of the Roman Forum and are essentially a continuation of the same ancient civic space, each emperor adding his own ceremonial precinct. Mussolini's Via dei Fori Imperiali cuts through them; archaeology is slowly recovering what the road covered.
Photographed in October 2016 in black and white during my first trip to Italy.
