Round haybales scattered across a Wiltshire field — a working landscape doing its ordinary work. The fields around Salisbury have been producing hay, wheat, and grazing for thousands of years; the bales are a contemporary form of an ancient pattern. From a distance, they look almost geological, as if someone had rolled the fields into stones.
Made in May 2023 on the road to Stonehenge. The drive out from London passes through some of the most photogenic farmland in England; this was one of the moments worth stopping for.
