A view across the Giudecca Canal toward the long, low silhouette of the Giudecca itself — an island that has always been slightly apart from the rest of Venice. Originally a place where Jewish Venetians were thought to have lived (the etymology of the name is disputed), it later became home to monasteries, gardens, and Andrea Palladio's church of the Redentore, which closes the eastern end of the island's skyline.
Made in late September 2016 in black and white during my first time in Venice. The Giudecca is the part of Venice that most visitors never reach; the view across to it is what most of them see.
