In late May the Highland hillsides erupt into yellow. Gorse — fierce, thorned, intensely fragrant in the sun — covers entire slopes in a color that looks almost artificial against the green moor and grey stone. The bloom is brief and unmistakable, one of the surest signs that spring has truly arrived in the north. Photographed in late May 2023 during my first trip to Scotland. The smell of gorse on a warm afternoon is one of the things I carried home that no image can quite hold; this photograph is the closest I came.
