A second view of the Forum, in black and white. The site was buried under accumulated soil for most of the medieval period — by the eighteenth century, the Forum was being used as cattle pasture, with a few standing columns rising from the grass. Systematic excavation began in the nineteenth century and continues today; new finds are still being made in what is one of the most heavily worked archaeological sites in the world.
Made in October 2016 during my first trip to Italy.
