Florence Cathedral

Santa Maria del Fiore — the Duomo of Florence — was begun in 1296 and not completed until Brunelleschi finished its dome in 1436. The dome is one of the great engineering achievements of the Renaissance, the largest masonry dome ever built, raised without a wooden centering by techniques Brunelleschi worked out himself and never fully documented. The cathedral is still the largest church in Florence and the visible symbol of the city.

Made in October 2016 during my first trip to Italy. The Duomo is one of those buildings where every photograph is a partial photograph; the building's scale and complexity exceed any single frame.
