Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin designed the Palace of Westminster in Gothic Revival style after the old palace burned in 1834, and the clock tower at its northern end was completed a quarter-century later. The result is one of the great civic compositions in Europe — a parliament building that looks as if it has stood for a thousand years and a clock tower that has come to stand for London itself. Made in May 2023 from a different vantage along the Thames embankment. The Palace rewards walking around it; every angle gives a different relationship between river, tower, and stone.
