The tower has lived several lives in the last decade: a six-year restoration from 2017 to 2022 returned the clock faces to their original Prussian blue and re-gilded the ornament to match the way Pugin first specified it. The version photographed here is the one freshly returned to its full color — closer to its 19th-century self than at any point in living memory. Made in May 2023, on a clear afternoon along the river. The tower's recent restoration gave anyone visiting that spring the chance to see it as Pugin intended; the camera was happy to record the result.
