On a small tidal island where three sea lochs meet — Loch Duich, Loch Long, and Loch Alsh — Eilean Donan stands as one of the most photographed castles in the world, and deservedly so. The thirteenth-century stronghold was destroyed in 1719 during the Jacobite risings and lay in ruins for two centuries before its early-twentieth-century restoration returned it to the silhouette it had held for nearly five hundred years.
Photographed on the road to Skye in late spring 2023, when the tide was low enough to expose the stone causeway. The Highlands are full of ruined castles; Eilean Donan is one of the few that still feels inhabited by everything that ever happened there.
