Colosseum

The Flavian Amphitheatre — the Colosseum — was completed in 80 AD under the emperor Titus and could hold up to 80,000 spectators. It hosted gladiatorial games, animal hunts, executions, mock sea battles, and dramatic performances for nearly four centuries. The building has been damaged by earthquakes, stripped for building stone, and used as a fortress, a quarry, and a chapel; the fact that any of it still stands is essentially a miracle of engineering.
