Chestatee Riverbank

Along the bank of the Chestatee River in the north Georgia foothills — the wooded edge where the water meets the land, rocks and roots and overhanging trees. This is the intimate scale of the river rather than the wide view: the bank itself, the texture of stone and current and shadow at the water's edge.

Photographed in 2010 in black and white during a trip through the southern mountains. There's a kind of river picture that isn't about the grand landscape at all — just a few feet of bank, the water sliding past, the small details that you only see when you stop walking and look down.
