The Brooklyn Bridge, opened in 1883, was the first steel-wire suspension bridge in the world and for years the longest — John Roebling's masterpiece, with its Gothic stone towers and its famous web of diagonal stays crossing the vertical cables. Its wooden pedestrian promenade, raised above the traffic, is one of the great walks in America.
Photographed May 2013, from the walkway. The cables sweep up symmetrically to the cable bands overhead and the Gothic tower rises ahead, crowds moving toward it. In black and white the geometry of the rigging takes over — a cathedral you cross on foot.
