A tighter view of the same trunk, deep cavities and fern-covered burls filling most of the frame, small gaps of blue sky visible where the canopy breaks. Trees this old accumulate damage the way buildings accumulate repairs — storms, disease, and simple weight have all left their mark, and the tree has simply grown around whatever it couldn't shed.
Photographed a few minutes after the first close trunk study, working around the tree to find a different gap in the bark.
