Ferns and resurrection fern crowd into the crook of the Angel Oak's trunk, the bark deeply furrowed and pale with lichen, a dark cavity opening into the wood below. Estimated at somewhere between 400 and 500 years old, the tree is a Southern live oak whose canopy shades close to 17,000 square feet — old enough, and large enough, that its exact age has never been settled with certainty.
Photographed close in on Johns Island, on a stop that turned into much longer than planned simply looking for the right angle on the trunk.
