Altar of the Fatherland

A second view of the monument, in black and white square format. The Vittoriano is built on the slope of the Capitoline Hill — the historic center of Roman civic life — and rises directly above the Forum, in deliberate physical conversation with the ancient ruins. The juxtaposition was intentional: Italian nationalism in the 1880s wanted to position itself as the heir to the Roman state.
