Across Salt Lake

The Great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the western hemisphere, a shallow remnant of a vast Ice Age lake, ringed by bare desert ranges. Under a high sun it turns to glare and haze, the water and the sky almost the same tone.

Photographed June 2003. A hard sun throws a diagonal chain of flare down toward the center, over a low dark range and a band of pale haze, with the lake in deep shadow below. Minimal and almost abstract — heat and light more than landscape.
