Built by Thomas Telford in the early nineteenth century and now bypassed by a newer crossing, it stands as it has for two hundred years — stone arches mossed with time, the water beneath them moving with the same urgency it always has.\n\nI came upon this bridge in late May 2023 on the long drive between Inverness and Skye. The thirteenth-century stronghold was destroyed in 1719 during the Jacobite risings and lay in ruins for two centuries before its early-twentieth-century restoration returned it to the silhouette it had held for nearly five hundred years.\n\nPhotographed on the road to Skye in late spring 2023, when the tide was low enough to expose the stone causeway. Today's castle is, in a sense, a careful twentieth-century reading of a medieval stronghold — and somehow none the less powerful for it. \n\nMade in late May 2023 on the road west to Skye.
