The tower has stood at the southern edge of the old city for more than eight centuries, watching over the road that runs down from the Alps toward Milan.\nPhotographed in late September 2016 in black and white during my first trip to Italy. Como is more often visited for its lake than for its city, but the historic center is itself worth a slow walk — Roman foundations, medieval walls, Renaissance churches, and the cathedral all packed into a few square blocks. The current bridge was built in 1933 as a temporary replacement for a deteriorating iron one, but the wooden span proved so popular that it was rebuilt to the same design in 1985 and is now considered permanent.
